Run Against Guns

Organized Run for better gun control

A run to raise money for Giffords Law Center and the prevention of gun violence

  • Every year more than 40,000 Americans lose their lives to gun violence; in 2021 48,000 people died because of a gun.
  • Over 1 million Americans were shot in the past decade, and the number is just going up.
  • In 2020, almost 3,000 kids died to guns with this number increasing to 3,500+ kids in 2021.
  • In neighboring states Maryland and Virginia, someone dies every 9-12 hours from a gun, and children in major cities are 3x more likely to be killed than kids in small towns.
  • Despite all of this, politicians still refuse to increase gun laws. According to an ABC news and Washington Post poll, 89% of Americans support background checks for all gun purchases and 56% support banning assault weapon sales.
  • With so many, or at least the majority, of people fearing mass shootings and wanting something to change, what's holding us up? If other countries, including the UK and Australia, can create a safer environment then so can the US.

Who am I?

I'm Jessica, a 10th grader at a DC high school. I’ve grown up in DC and as a part of being an American student, I’ve been doing school shooter drills since second grade. As I’ve learned more about gun violence in our country, I have realized more and more why we need better gun control. I wanted to find ways to help; ways to spread the message and give directly to those working for the same things. From this I decided to organize Run Against Guns with the hope of sharing our goal and donating money to an organization working for better gun control.

What is our goal?

  • From this run:
    • Raising money for Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a leading gun control organization in America
  • Overall:
    • Changing minds and voting for politicians that support gun control
    • Increasing background checks on gun owners
    • Banning assault weapons
